Spring is the perfect time to reset your home with a deep cleaning, ensuring that the transition from cold to warmer weather is as smooth as possible. Tackle your spring cleaning tasks with this handy list!
Ground Zero: Declutter
Decluttering is the first step of a good deep clean. You can’t get to scrubbing every nook and cranny if there is clutter in your way! Start in one corner of every room and do a thorough sweep, combing through and separating objects into keep, donate, and trash piles. Dust objects as you go if necessary.
Kitchen
- Faucet: To clean your kitchen faucet, wipe with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. If there is buildup, tie a bag of vinegar water around your faucet head, then gently scrub with a brush.
- Appliances: Use vinegar and a microfiber cloth to clean stainless-steel appliances and rinse with water. Never use abrasive scrubbers that may scuff or scratch on your stainless-steel appliances.
- Cabinets: Declutter your cabinets, pull-outs, and drawers, including utensils, cookware, and dishes. Wipe down the cabinet interiors with a dry microfiber cloth and vacuum out if necessary, then wipe down with a vinegar and water mixture. Replace and organize your cabinet’s contents.
- Refrigerator: To clean your refrigerator, begin with removing all contents, tossing unwanted or expired foods as you go. Clean and scrub all shelves and interior drawers using a mixture of vinegar and water. If your freezer has more than a quart inch of ice buildup, it is time to defrost your freezer.
- Small Appliances: Clean your microwave by steaming a bowl of water and scrubbing the interior with a mixture of vinegar and water. Change filters on your coffee maker and wipe down all small appliances with vinegar mixture.
- Pantry: Clean out the pantry, vacuum and wipe shelves down with microfiber cloth. Toss expired goods, donate unwanted items, clean shelves and reorganize food products and small appliances. Consider using organizational bins and labels to organize foods.
Bathroom
To deep clean your bathroom, begin by removing countertop clutter and toiletries to give you a clean slate to work with.
- Bath and Shower: Start with scrubbing your tub and shower, working away at soap and grime build up. If you have a shower curtain, remove and toss in washing machine or handwash. In the meantime, dust and scrub the shower rod and curtain hooks. Soak your showerhead in vinegar water and scrub with soft brush to break down mineral buildup.
- Vanity: Organize and scrub clean vanity cabinets and drawers. Wipe clean countertops and sinks, taking time to clean and organize any vanity countertop storage or decorations. Thoroughly wipe down faucet with vinegar water mixture and microfiber cloth for streak-free finish. Do not forget to clean your mirror for a sparkling reflection!
- Toilet: For the most thorough cleaning, we suggest removing your toilet seat to reach every spot easily. Start with scrubbing the inside of your toilet bowl with a toilet bowl cleaner, letting it sit for 5-10 minutes and then scrubbing with a toilet brush. Spray exterior of toilet with a disinfectant cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping clean.
Pro-Tip:
Losing momentum? Dust between larger, more intensive tasks.
Laundry Room
While you are busy switching out your winter wardrobe for your warm-weather clothes, it is a great time to tidy up your laundry room.
- Washer and Dryer: Move your washer and dryer to vacuum behind them. Dust and wipe clean the exteriors of your machines, scrubbing away any detergent or softener buildup. Don’t forget to clear your lint traps!
- Supplies: Organize your laundering and cleaning supplies, making sure to wipe up any spills and dust. Consider storage containers for extra hangers, clothespins, and other laundering supplies.
Home Office
Keeping a clean, organized workspace is vital to a comfortable home-working environment.
- Organize: Organize all loose papers, tossing or shredding unnecessary paperwork and filing documents you would like to keep. Sort and label all files, storing them in a system that makes sense to you. Test all cords, and label to prevent confusion.
- Dusting and Vacuuming: Dust your monitor, keyboard, mouse, and other electronics. Wipe down and vacuum your office chair. Do not forget to vacuum beneath your desk (especially if you tend to eat where you work.) Dust and wipe down all cabinets, counters, and shelves, and organize and vacuum out drawers and cabinets.
Final Touches
Now that every major room has been tackled, there are a few finishing touches before your spring-cleaning routine is complete!
- Light Switches and Outlets: Check all your light switches and power outlets to ensure that the plates and screws are firmly secured. Wipe all light switches clean with disinfectant wipes.
- Smoke and Co2 Detectors: Check your Smoke and Co2 Detectors to ensure they are working properly. Dust and change batteries if needed.
- Fire Extinguishers: Ensure all fire extinguishers are in good shape and in date.
