Choosing Colors: What Your Bathroom Color Palette Says About You

Did You Know?

Research suggests the human eye can see up to 100,000,000 distinct shades of color. Seriously.

With so many varying shades of color to choose from, it is no surprise that different hues have been given personalities of their own to distinguish them from one another. When selecting colors, it is important to consider these personalities, what they communicate, and how they work together. For example, bright white walls, floors, and fixtures can make a small bathroom feel more spacious, and using a pop of color for your vanity makes it the focal point against all of that white. Knowing how to use color is important, and we’re here to help you learn everything there is to know about picking the perfect palette for your bathroom. You may even learn something about yourself along the way!

Red:

Red is an unconventional color for a bathroom. It is an energizing color, and bathrooms tend to be centered around feelings of tranquility and relaxation. Incorporating red into your bathroom means that you are not afraid to stand out and like the thrill of a challenge. Cherry, brick red, and shades of vermillion and maroon can bring a rich, luxurious feeling to your bathroom. Red can pair beautifully with navy and powder blue, ochre yellow, and striking black.

Orange:

Orange is a versatile color and can say a variety of things depending on what shade you select.
Bright oranges create a cheerful, playful vibe, calling back to the eclecticism of the 70’s, and play well with cerulean blue, avocado green, and – if you are daring enough – vivid shades of pink. If you are looking at brighter shades of orange for your bathroom, that may say you are an outgoing personality who doesn’t take life too seriously.
More subdued shades of orange, like terracotta, rust, and burnt orange add a touch of warm earthiness to your home. If you are drawn to these de-saturated shades of orange, you may be seeking to feel grounded and reconnect with nature through your home design. Keep the palette natural and pair these shades of orange with soft creams, tans, and sage and olive greens.

Yellow:

Color psychology indicates that yellow has a “happy” effect, brightening the mood of the room. Despite this, saturated lemon-yellow has shown to be a visually irritating color, causing anxiety and feelings of stress. Instead, opt for delicate cream and butter yellows or mature mustard and ochre yellows to keep your bathroom a sunny, happy space. Pair lighter yellows with clean whites, deep browns, and warmer blues. Compliment deeper yellows with rich burgundy, creamier yellows, and pops of black.

Green:

Green is a rejuvenating color, bringing the healing feeling of nature into your home. Whether you prefer fresh sage, warm olive, or deep forest green, you are sure to give your bathroom new life by incorporating it into your design. Simultaneously energizing and relaxing, green lovers tend to seek balance in life. Get the most out of green and pair it with warm terracotta, natural woody browns, jet black, and blush pink.

Blue:

With its association with water, it is no surprise that blue is the most popular color for bathrooms. Blue is known to be a soothing color, bringing about feelings of peace and serenity, making it an excellent choice for a bathroom. If you are feeling blue for your bathroom, you probably enjoy a relaxing trip to the beach or pool and like to take things easy. Pair shades like navy, sky, steel, and powder blue with deep reds, delicate yellows, pops of orange, and cool grays.

Purple:

Looking to add a touch of drama to your bathroom? Purple is your color! Whether it’s plum, lavender, or royal, purple is a creative color that feels luxurious and calming.  If you’re choosing shades of purple for your bathroom, chances are you’re an imaginative person with a taste for the finer things in life. Pair purple with neutrals such as silver gray, clean white, and onyx black so it can take center stage.

Pink:

Pink is a youthful color that evokes feelings of gentleness and optimism. Opting for paler shades like blush, crepe, and Mamie pink can help cultivate a delicate, vintage elegance for your space, whereas shades of salmon, rosewood, cerise, and raspberry pink pack a visual punch that can wake up your bathroom’s color scheme. Pink is the perfect mixture of modern and traditional, and partners well with cool greens, rich deep browns, and crisp white.

At the end of the day, the colors you select are to personalize your space to your unique tastes. We hope that this post has given you the information you need to feel confident and informed when choosing what colors to incorporate in your bathroom design!
